Trainings

Singing, Toning and Sound Therapy

A note from Dr. Snow to all interested participants:  It is frustrating indeed to have to continue to postpone this in-person training.  Just when things were beginning to open up in late 2021, the Omicron variant appeared. Now, in January of 2022 I have to postpone this training once again, until we can safely meet in person, without the fear of this highly transmissible variant, infecting us.  I will update this notice on a monthly basis.  Rest assured,  I will set dates for these trainings as soon as we can safely meet in person.  Thank you for your patience.

To receive a Certificate as a Certified Sound Therapist, participants must complete all 3 levels of the training.  In addition, they must complete and submit reports on 5 practice sessions for Level 1 and Level 2 respectively, and complete 12 practice sessions for Level 3.  Supervision will be available on an as-needed basis post-training, for an additional hourly fee.

This training is open to music therapists, creative arts and expressive arts therapists, psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors and other mental health practitioners.

Music and Sound exist on a continuum, and increasingly, music therapy practice is incorporating forms of singing that employ individual tones, known as toning, or chanting, with an emphasis on the vibrational aspects of the sounds and melodies.  The aim of this Training is to introduce participants to the expanding theory and practice of singing, toning and sound in music therapy.  Music therapists are discovering new applications for this work, and developments stemming from recent research are resulting in new models and new interventions.  Dr. Snow will present an overview of current practices, and present the latest research in this area.

Level 1

Participants in the Level 1 training will learn how to use their voices to engage in improvisational singing in a form known as toning with their clients.  They will learn a cutting-edge intervention using Toning for 1:1 work with clients presenting with anxiety, emotional regulation issues from trauma or BPD, and/or ADHD, ADD.  This intervention is based on newly completed research conducted by Dr. Snow and colleagues at the International Laboratory for Brain, Music and Sound Research (BRAMS) in Montreal, Canada.
